Did you know that you can play your PlayStation games on your smartphone? Ever since 2014, it's been possible to stream games from your PlayStation 4 onto your mobile phone over a Wi-Fi network through the PS Remote Play app.

And yes, it's now also possible to now do the same thing from the PS5 - if you've been lucky enough to find one that is. Here's how to stream PlayStation games to your iPhone or Android phone via PS Remote Play.

Here's what you'll need:

  • An iPhone or Android phone with the latest version of iOS or Android and access to a Wi-Fi network
  • A PS4 or PS5 with the latest firmware and connected to the internet
  • Optional but strongly recommended: a DualShock 4 or DualSense controller

Step 1: Download the PS Remote Play app

The PS Remote Play app is available to download for free from the App Store and Google Play. Follow these links depending on your device:

Step 2: Make sure your PlayStation is on

Booting up the app will quickly establish direct control of your console, but in order to make the connection, you'll first need to ensure that it's ready to receive. If you use Rest mode (where the console is on permanent standby), you don't need to worry about this step.

Note: Sony recommends a connection speed of at least 5Mbps to use PS Remote Play. We'd strongly recommend hooking your PlayStation directly up to your router via an ethernet cable, as it will ensure a faster, more stable connection.

Step 3: Sign in to your PlayStation Network account

Open the PS Remote Play app and log in to your PlayStation Network account. This needs to be the same account as the one you're signed into on your PlayStation.

Follow the instructions, select the appropriate console and accept any permission requests where necessary.

Step 4: Take control

Once connected you'll see your PlayStation home screen - or whatever game you left running on your console the last time you booted it up - on your phone's screen. Virtual buttons will be overlaid on the display, allowing you to take direct control with your phone.

Accessing the Settings menu of the app will let you adjust the resolution (up to 1080p) and frame rate of the stream. You'll want a strong connection at both ends to run it at full whack.

When it comes to playing the games themselves, we'd strongly recommend pairing your PlayStation controller with your phone. For the DualShock 4, hold the PlayStation button and the Share button until the light flashes, then find and select the controller in your phone's Bluetooth Settings menu.
